Narrative and Genre. -Narrative is the way a story is organised.

There are different sides to a narrative structure. The narrative or plot is the way it is structured.

The story is what happens. - Example of a simple and short story line.

A linear narrative is when the film goes from start to finish. (like the example given above).

Non-Linear Narrative means More fragmented. this can be used to create more tension in the movie.

A Fragmented Narrative is when the story line is all over the place, e.g the movie Memento, by Christopher Nolan as shown above. This movie is a very useful example as the director plays on the audiences mind with a quick reference back to the past every so often in the movie.

The change from the past to the future is displayed in black and white in the movie and this is where the  Writer plays on the viewers imagination.

My knowledge of narrative and genre will help me produce a good film as i can now understand how and why writers change from different scenes in a film to build up tension and anxiety within the viewer.

  1. Grace, so far in class we have compiled a recipe for a thriller and studied “The Birds”, “North by Northwest”, “Psycho” and “Manchurian Candidate” films. For each of these you should have a blog. Please go back and complete any that are missing. If you need me to send any notes about missing ones, please email me. Remember to copy key scenes from films etc and to analyse/deconstruct tension is created. You should also be adding your own thrillers to the blog. How do they fit into our recipe?
